Why Ham relies on cars
Ham is one of the few places near Kingston without a railway station. The nearest are in Kingston, Teddington across the river and Richmond, all a bus ride away. That makes a pre-booked taxi especially useful here for early flights, late trains and anything involving luggage.
From our base in Kingston, we usually reach Ham in 10 to 15 minutes along the Richmond Road (A307), past Ham Parade and towards Ham Common.
Around Ham
We pick up across Ham, from the houses around Ham Common and Ham Street to the roads near the river, the Wates Estate and the streets off Petersham Road. Ham House and Garden, run by the National Trust, sits by the Thames at the end of Ham Street, and Richmond Park's Ham Gate is on the eastern edge of the village.
If you live down one of the lanes or closes off Ham Street, tell us which end of the road to come to; it saves time on the day.
Ham to the airports
Ham is well placed for Heathrow. Your driver can go through Kingston and over Kingston Bridge, or north via Richmond and the A316 towards Twickenham and the airport.
- Heathrow: typically 30 to 45 minutes
- Gatwick: typically 50 to 65 minutes
- London City: typically 70 to 90 minutes
Times are typical estimates and depend on traffic.
See our Heathrow taxi page for terminals and pick-up details.
Trains from Richmond and Kingston
If you prefer the train but do not want to walk with luggage, we can drop you at Richmond station, Kingston station or Teddington. Or we can take you all the way to a London terminus such as Paddington, which is a fairly direct drive from this side of London.
Visitors to Ham House and the riverside
Ham House is a popular day out, and the riverside path towards Richmond and Teddington Lock attracts walkers all year. If you are visiting and want to get home without a long walk back, call us for a pick-up near Ham House or Ham Common.
Pets and family trips
Ham is a dog-walking area, between Ham Common, the riverside and Richmond Park. Our pet friendly taxi can take you and your dog to the vet or the groomer, with notice.
Crossing the river at Teddington Lock
The footbridge at Teddington Lock links Ham with Teddington, and many people walk between the two. By road, though, the journey from Ham to Teddington goes through Kingston and over Kingston Bridge, or round via Richmond and Twickenham. If you are heading to Teddington or Twickenham with bags, it is further by car than it looks on a map, so allow for that when booking.
Polo, gardens and summer days
Ham Polo Club plays on summer weekends near Ham House, and Petersham Nurseries, just up the road, is a popular place for lunch. On fine days these attract plenty of visitors, and parking along the narrow lanes is limited. We can drop you near the entrance and collect you later.
Neighbouring areas
We also cover Teddington across the river, Kingston Hill and Coombe on the other side of Richmond Park, and Petersham. See all of them on our areas we cover page.
